Way up North

Last weekend we decided to cross an Alaska agenda off the list; go to the Arctic Circle!

Excited to hit the road

Excited to hit the road

When we first moved to Alaska we had read that the roads were treacherous and likely to destroy a car so tours and flights were the best way to go, however we recently began reading about it more. It seemed that roads may be largely gravel with potholes-a-plenty but that many folks manage to share the road with trucks and make it there unscathed.

So, preparedness in mind, we got ourselves a safety-CB radio stocked up on water food and sleeping bags and hit the road early in the morning.  With many photo ops it was about a 6 hour drive north and a 5 hour drive back south that night. Following the pipeline the entire way.

Happily we managed to cross the Arctic Circle and the Yukon River and see the Brooks Range…and merely have pictures to share.

Bridge over the Yukon River; another item on the Alaska List

EL Patton Bridge over the Yukon River; another item on the Alaska List; we learned that it is built to be able to expand / contract up to 2 feet to deal with the change in temperatures during the year

After travelling 18 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it was time to turn around and go back home!
