I’ve been asked, by my mom, to show what town is like. While big box stores don’t incite me to document their presence, Fairbanks has a pretty sweet, if largely deserted, downtown. So I remembered to grab my camera when we went off for a downtown stroll this past weekend.
Winter has settled in to stay it seems; the drive into town now accented in whites.
We started our stroll along the water at the Fairbanks Cultural Center, which is also fun to check out though we didn’t un-bundle to stay for the aurora borealis film…this time!
This part of downtown has some great storefronts, mixed in with boarded up buildings. My favorite, by far, is what used to be the “Northern Lights hotel” which now has boarded up windows and a lovely sign at the top saying it is “Looking for Love, again”. Love!
Unfortunately, the Fudge Pot wasn’t open for a visit.
We’ve gone to the Fairbanks Ice Museum before…perhaps worth going to once for it’s historic charm. Otherwise, I think the Ice Museum at the Chena Hot Springs Resort has more to offer the ice carving enthusiast.
& here are a few more Driveway Aurora’s that I captured that night. There have been some fantastic displays overhead lately…always on work nights when I am fast asleep. Someday, soon, I hope to capture them!
PS — we’re getting more and more darkness these days, which means that when it’s here the sun is low and generally pretty interesting. This was a sunset I captured down the road (on my phone) while off to run errands late afternoon the next day…figured I’d add it in!
