This has been our favorite discovery, I think, the Chena State Park just about a half an hour from where we live. It has both a river and a lake, and many a trails to explore. The lake has wonderful inlets, islands, and channels to discover; we find ourselves saying things like “is this the place where we ended up last time, you know, with the fish jumping and that stump?” pretty often.
We’ve decided the lake, with it’s peaceful scenes and non-motorized policies, is our favorite for kayaking in this state park. We tried the river park section once and found both the ever-present current of the Chena River and the highly weaponized camouflaged hunting boats (!!!!) a bit…annoying?
Presumably these guys were going out to hunt ducks in their loud monstrosities with rifles and semi’s mounted all over the place.
On the other hand, in the lake there were also ducks, and they were adorable and left in peace except to be photographed by me. So we picked our favorite. The lake.
